7. WHEN YOU MAKE A BREAKTHROUGH, THAT'S THE TIME TO WORK EVEN HARDER! by Brian Austin Whitney, Just Plain Folks © 2007 All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission Those of us who have big dreams and big goals sometimes shoot ourselves in the foot when we finally hook the "big fish." We get so excited when someone in a power position shows us interest, that we stop everything else and hang on every action, word or acknowledgement they give us. I bet everyone reading this has done it before. I've done it a lot myself, far too many times. Some examples: 1. A producer or label representative shows interest in our band. So we stop pursuing all our other promotional and industry efforts and sit on our hands waiting for their blessing/offer which may or may not ever come. 2. We get some interest in one or more of our songs from a publisher so we stop writing new songs and expanding our catalog while we wait to see what happens with those songs. 3. We get some interest from a big music conference for a showcase slot (or perhaps a high profile opening act slot for a major tour), so we stop booking our other shows around that time frame because we're so hopeful they will come through with the big slot we've been waiting for. 4. A famous artist puts our song on hold for their next project, so we bask in the glory we're sure will come when the big time artist records and makes our song a hit instead of pushing our other material to other artists and publishers. I could go on and on.. but that's a sample of stupid things we do to ourselves when someone in some level of importance shows interest in our work. We often shut down all our other efforts (or at least lose focus on them) and focus instead on the big fish. It's a huge mistake. But it's human nature to get excited and infatuated when the "big time" comes calling. But truth be told, we're all little guys (and gals) even though sometimes other people pretend we're something more. That includes the label exec, publisher, conference committee and everyone else. We're all one success from being big and one failure from being at the bottom of the pile. So keep it in perspective and never put those eggs in the proverbial "single basket." And getting away from the metaphors and philosophical ponderings for a minute, there's a very practical reason not to do the opposite of the impulse to simply wait around for the results. If you broke through and attracted the interest from someone who you think really matters, then that's the time to crank up all your efforts into overdrive because it indicates you're on the right track and if you attracted 1 publisher, producer, label, booking agent (fill in the blank) then you can likely attract others. And the only thing better than an important person taking interest in your work is having 4 or 5 others doing the same thing. So the next time you make a breakthrough, don't stop and stand around, keep running forward as fast as you can and harder than ever. Before you know it you'll realize that first big opportunity, nice as it may be, is only one of many options you have. Before you know it you'll be the "Big" person who will be making the difference in someone else's life. Brian Austin Whitney is the Founder of the Just Plain Folks Music Organization, which is one of the largest groups of artists, writers and industry professionals in the world (over 40,000 artists). To become a member, or learn more about all the organization has to offer, visit their website at www.jpfolks.com
