Making it in the music
industry... that is a road that is most assuredly fraught with
perils of all kinds. There is something out there that can help to
protect the indie musician while he or she is working on becoming
famous. The Indie Bible is a useful collection of everything that
you need to get started. Divided into six comprehensive sections,
this book is stuffed full of some amazing tips and articles, as well
as places to promote yourself and your music, and the best ways of
doing so.
Section One handles the “Reviews of Independent
Music.” There are numerous places to have your music reviewed around
the world. Some are genre specific, while others are less discerning
and will accept any kind of music. There are publications all over
the world listed in this section, and all music genres are covered
in the 100+ pages of easy to decipher addresses and
comments.
Section Two covers a very difficult aspect of the
indie music biz, “Radio Stations that are Willing to Play
Independent Music.” If you’re backed by one of the monoliths in the
industry, you’ve never had to worry about getting airtime, but
others aren’t so fortunate. In this section of the Indie Bible, you
are once again given the addresses and e-mails of stations that will
take your music, both genre specific, and non-genre specific. Places
where you can get some airtime, and these are all around the world,
online and off.
Section Three covers another common stumbling
block, “Services that Will Help You to Sell Your Music.” This is the
area that deals with promotion, and is usually best left to a
professional. With the right promotional work you can go places,
just as the wrong promo could leave you buried in the shadows
forever. Image and sound is everything, and these people know what
they are doing, and who is best to contact to help you sell your
music.
With the Internet being such a strong and positive
force in our lives, Section Four only makes sense - “Sites that will
Allow You to Upload your Music and Video Files.” This is again put
together in a fantastically comprehensive format, alphabetically
ordered and genre specific, the Indie Bible makes it incredibly
simple to decide on whom to send your MP3s and Videos
to.
Section Five is “Helpful Resources for Musicians and
Songwriters.” You’ll find a serious amount of interesting resources
held here, everything from designing a great web site to programs
that will help you with your itinerary, or creating label designs
and some more promo thoughts and help.
In Section Six you
might just find the most helpful information. Entitled “Articles
that will Help you to Succeed in the Music Business;” this section
is filled with some wonderfully informative articles and advice from
those who have been there. There are articles on how to get your
music into film, creating audio files, finding agents, contracts,
and yes, even stage fright.
David did a simply outstanding
job in compiling all this information and then putting it together
into such a comprehensive book. I usually end up frustrated with
books like this, after having to flip back and forth a zillion times
in order to find what I want I desire only to throw them over the
balcony and let the dog use them for a new chewy. The Indie Bible is
completely different, and totally useful. I was able to find what I
wanted without delays, and it was laid out in an easy to deal with
and understand format.
If you are a musician, or even a
songwriter, I’d suggest ensuring that a copy of the Indie Bible is
always amongst your most precious tools. This is the book that can
turn your perilous road with hidden traps and clauses into an easy
to follow yellow brick one, leading you straight to your goals.
Naturally, you’ll still need a couple of things of your own - like
talent and drive. If you have those, the rest can’t be too far
behind with the help you’ll find here.
