7. TWO METHODS FOR FINDING GIGS (A Scientific Study)
by David Wimble, The Indie Venue Bible
? 2008 All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission

It's a common occurrence for any service that solicits music in this business. Radio show hosts, music reviewers and certainly club owners, are all bombarded by artists that have no business contacting them in the first place.

As a music service, you state specifics in your submission details. It's a simple courtesy to let people know which styles you are interested in, and at the same time, informs artists that play other styles that your service is not one that can help them out. You're politely telling them to move on.

For example, the submission policy on a FOLK music review website may read like this. "Please only send me Folk music. Do NOT send any other music other than Folk. When I say Folk, I'm talking Peter, Paul and Mary. I am not secretly looking for other styles of music. I only want Folk because that's the kind of music I like to review. I do not want to be converted. I don't like to review any other type of music. Other styles of music make me ill, so please make sure that you send only Folk music. DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN....DO NOT SEND ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC!!! Please, don't do it! I have a gun to my head! I swear, I'll blow my brains out if your CD is not FOLK! I'm begging you with all available mercy...please do NOT send anything but FOLK music! That's FOLK....... F....... O....... L.......K........FOLK!!"

What's the first CD this music editor digs out of his PO Box on Monday morning? You guessed it....PUNK. The next one in the pile. HIP HOP. Then, some NEW AGE, a few ROCK and METAL CDs....some COMEDY.... and so it goes all through the stack until, right near the bottom, yes....a FOLK CD!

He hands the rest of the unusable stack to Doreen the postal clerk (who sells them on E-bay) and then heads off to work.

Why artists do this is a mystery. Is it laziness? Is it fear? Is it arrogance, thinking that their music is so great that no matter who listens to it, they'll love it?

THE STUDY

I recently did a tele-seminar with booking guru Jeri Goldstein. We had people send in questions before the seminar and Jeri was going to do her best to respond to them. One musician asked what percent of return he could expect if he sent out a mass e-mailing to 1000 venues.

Thank you my friend. I couldn't have formed a better question myself to lead into the two methods of landing gigs that I'm about to examine. "Time Saving" versus "Time Consuming."

Let's look at these two methods closer.

STUDY - METHOD ONE (TIME SAVING)

Malcolm is in a Rock band. He knows a little bit about statistics, and knows that the more e-mails he sends out, the more responses he's likely to get. So, he sends 1000 e-mails to venues in his region in order to land some gigs.

He's a thinker, so he's probably put some thought into his e-mail. Having received many in my years publishing The Indie Bible, I'm sure his request goes something like this...

"hi, were a really good band want us to play we rock! www.myspace.com/lazy_a_s_s"

Malcom's smart. He knows that using caps is a real time-waster. Same with punctuation. Who pays attention to that stuff?

So, out they go. 1000 e-mails. And the excitement builds.

Malcolm wonders "will I get a 10% return...that's a hundred?" "Maybe more....once they listen to our tunes, maybe 15 - 20%....that's 150 or maybe 200." "Hmmm, we can't do that many gigs, so we'll have to get rid of some....first come first serve?" "Sorry buddy, you snooze, you lose." "Hey, how about free drinks?" ...

Weeks go by and there's no response? "What's going on? Did all those e-mails get caught in a spam filter or something? Maybe that stupid server broke down? Check the MySpace page...nope....nothing? Oh, hold on, here's a message.

"Sure, whatever...come by"

As you've probably guessed, it's from a booker that runs a dump that no one that's ever seen it would play at.

The fact is, other than that one questionable booker getting back, every other e-mail has been deleted upon receipt!

METHOD ONE - RESULTS

1. it is totally useless!
2. it has never worked and never will work!
3. it is a waste of the infinitesimal effort you have put into your project!
4. you may as well take your dog for a walk!
5. you're wasting my time!
6. why are you torturing me!

STUDY - METHOD TWO (TIME CONSUMING)

Janet is in a Jazz band. She wants to tour throughout Ohio. She opens the copy of The Indie Venue Bible she bought for the North Central US and scrolls down to Ohio.

It looks like every possible venue is listed in Ohio...but she thinks to herself "do they ALL feature Jazz bands?"

Then she notices that there is a brightly and uniquely colored tag for the  JAZZ   genre that is placed beside all venues that welcome Jazz musicians. She thinks...."hmmm.....it might be a good idea for me to just contact the venues WITH the  JAZZ   tag and NOT contact the venues that have other tags like  ROCK   or  SOUL  . I think that's what I'll do. I'll contact the venues that actually feature JAZZ artists. Yes, as I think this through, it's starting to make a lot more sense. That's what I'm going to do!"

Janet notices that there is a club in Columbus with the bright blue  JAZZ   tag beside it. She clicks on the website and goes to their submission page. "Heck, this is super time consuming" she thinks to herself. "I've spent 15 freaking seconds trying to land this gig so far. Oh, now I have to read this submission garbage. Geez, now I have to send in my EPK. That's another 20 seconds I'll never get back. Actually, while I'm here, I may as well check to see what the contact's name is. Ah, it's Mary. I'll mention that when I send in my EPK. And I do like the look of the place. I'll mention that too. And I recognize some of the bands that have played there. There's a lot of similarities between my music and theirs. I'll mention that too. Well, there goes half the day."

Then a few minutes later...

"You know what. I just spent 5 minutes at that last place. Let's see if I can make up for that enormous amount of time and speed things up here. Ah, here's another venue with the brightly colored  JAZZ    tag. Click. Here we go again. The booking page. You want me to phone you? Oh brother. What's this jerk's name? Brian. Hey, not a bad looking place. Seats 100. Sweet. I'll dial him up. Hey the Jimmy Mandrake Trio played there. I know them. I'll mention that. Hi, could I speak to Brian please? Hi Brian, my name is Janet Smith and I'm ..."

Another 3 minutes she'll never get back.

Janet continues on for the rest of the afternoon. She discovers that not all venues like to be contacted the same way. Some ask that she snail mail her press kit and a demo. Others ask for an e-mail with an intro. Some prefer an EPK. Others request a phone call. Some even ask for an e-mail with a link to her music.

"I only got to about 25 places today" she thinks to herself. My friend Malcolm contacted 1000 venues and it only took him a few seconds. How can I compete with that kind of madness?"

A couple of weeks go by and Janet has landed a load of gigs for her and the band. "Wow, this Indie Venue Bible is incredible!" she thinks to herself. "What a simple concept. First, only contact the venues that feature my style of music. And then second, take the time to find out a little about each venue before I contact them. Thank you Indie Venue Bible for blowing my mind!"

METHOD TWO - RESULTS

1. by contacting only venues that feature your style of music, you will experience a new freedom
2. every time you check the submission details, a venue owner weeps with gratitude
3. by finding out a bit about the venue, you are creating a better world
4. it will get you gigs
5. you will be happy (not sad like Malcolm)

CONCLUSION

The numbers speak for themselves. The drawback for people like Malcolm is that METHOD TWO takes a bit of time and effort. To avoid this necessary effort, he'll continue to pound his head against the wall trying to bring those numbers up.

The fact is that METHOD ONE presents the same probablility of landing a bunch of gigs as The Prince of Nigeria has of landing your bank account details. Sure, there will always be a few shows that trickle through, but if you plan on having a long and prosperous career, you may as well start off by building yourself a foundation of good habits - and begin to recognize that an effort and a sacrifice of your time is required. There is no avoiding this.

Success takes effort and sacrifice. It's a universal law.
