FUTURE VISION FOR ONLINE INDEPENDENT MUSIC by Alfred Himmelweiss and Graham Ball of easybe.com ? 2007 All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ The digitalization of distribution channels can lead to positive changes for the independent music industry. Networks will form - networks between fans and musicians. The blog community are the leading example for such a network. Driven more by interest and enthusiasm than anything else, music enthusiasts will communicate their love of music from point to point and connect websites all over the internet. In the past, musicians had to go on tour go come into contact with their fans. The more shows they played, the more fans they reached or converted. Actual physical presence in clubs and concert halls was an absolute requirement. For this to take place, a band needed healthy relations with bookers and agents. Ideally, the band would speak personally to a handful of fans after the show and maybe do an interview for the local college radio station or newspaper. The future fan-artist networks will take down the barrier between music "provider" and music consumer. When people listen to music, they create their own internal micro-cosmos. As such, listening to music is a creative process, much like making music is. Listeners can communicate their personal impressions to anyone who cares to read about it. Music creators will read these accounts and in turn be motivated and inspired to make more music. Listeners can read about shared experiences and personal impressions and by doing so, maybe find a new favorite band. The model is this - if you like the report, you feel inclined to like the writer, like the music that inspired it. In this network, artists and listeners give and take in roughly equal amounts. Musicians get feedback direct from the source. Fans may feel empowered by their own musical micro-cosmos to take instruments into their own hands. The network that provided the inspiration now provides a distribution channel. Think about bastardpop - created by fans from existing music and distributed via independent internet networks. A new, independent music community. The network itself opens new product cycles. The spontaneity and speed of the network allows even a classical "one-day wonder" - the up-to-the-minute topical song. What inspires you as an artist? Your new love? War? Winning the football game? The latest news? Or do you just want to react to the most recent song from your favorite band? A tribute or a cover? Write it, record it, put it out there. On the network, what used to take days takes hours. Within the space of a day, you can tell the world how you feel and have an international hit. Make your music! Write a song! There are people out there who will love it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Graham Ball is a musician and writer when his day job permits.
