ALTERNATIVE RADIO TRENDS AND WHAT THEY MEAN TO YOU by Liz Koch, Notorious Radio © 2007 All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Last month (January 2005) WHFS, a flagship station for the Modern Rock/Alternative format in the Baltimore/DC market, flipped to Spanish programming. Mid-way through 2004 KHRO in El Paso, TX did the same. Even a year ago, two other flagship stations, KNDD "The End" in Seattle and WNNX "99X" in Atlanta, decided to drop the majority of the 'new music' on their playlists, opting instead to play more 'Alternative Gold' (aka Classic Rock for Gen X) with a few 'cool' and 'local' bands thrown in for flavor. Meanwhile the trends for 2004 show Satellite Radio, which can be heard Nationally, gaining millions of new listeners last year between both XM and Sirius. Web Radio, which can be heard Globally, DOUBLED its listening base in just ONE year and is now listened to by 10% of the ENTIRE U.S. population!!! Whereas it's true technology and digital listening are on the rise, I think there's something much more important going on. Let's break it down into simple terms: WHFS and KHRO flip, which means they no longer had the listener base to attract advertisers (because sadly that's what Commercial Radio is about: commercials). "The End" and "99X" changed up their formats for two reasons, the first being the above, the second being they saw the writing on the wall before it was too late. But why an 'Alternative Gold' and a 'cool'/local focus? Easy: the risk of losing the displaced Gen X listening community FOREVER, thus losing their base and therefore their advertisers. This group of loyal listeners, who made them what they are, have found themselves less and less able to relate to what was going on on the radio. I know because I was one! These stations also ran the risk of losing local band support, aka the TRUE music heads of the market. Playlists, over the past few years, have become increasingly less open to 'taking a chance'. Less bands got spun more, in the true Pop radio fashion. Also driving the local bands away was the fact that 9 out of 9 of the bands ON that tight playlist were on Major Labels, with Major Label dollars behind them: something most local bands could only dream about competing with, but realizing the reality. Mix that all together, and what do you have? Disaffected music fans turning off their radios once and for all. The same group of people searching for alternat e means to hear something different, something local, something tangible and, sadly, something more interesting. Enter Web and Satellite radio with no commercials. Enter the displaced DJs and programmers who had either quit traditional radio out of frustration or were forced out for caring too much about the music. In most cases these folks programmed the New Music or 'Specialty' shows, which showcased different sounds from the station playlist, a lot of times playing local and unsigned bands. They did the radio that took the chances that made Radio exciting in the first place. They saw in Web and Satellite radio what had attracted them to Radio in the first place: turning people on to amazing new music. They saw in Web and Satellite radio the exact thing that has led to its rapid growth: the ability to deliver something different with less inane talk and no commercials. They saw the freedom that traditional radio had forgotten about. So, what does this all mean for you, the indie band who wants to make themselves known? Simple: EVERYTHING!!! If more traditional radio stations embrace the format changes "The End" and "99X" have done, you will have more of a shot of getting heard on your local Commercial Alternative radio station. NOT just on the New Music or Specialty show...in regular rotation! But why only strive for local domination? The numbers show that you can easily gain a National audience by getting on Satellite radio. There is a channel, XM-Unsigned, that plays nothing but bands like yours day in and day out. Billy Zero (the channel's programmer) will even mention your band's website on the air, and link you from the XM website. From there you will see record sales in markets you didn't necessarily think would be into your music. And from THERE you can better focus your touring, marketing and promotional efforts. But why settle for the US? Web Radio will give you exposure around the globe! It's becoming more and more common for me to hear about independent artists touring Scandanavia or Japan, simply because someone over there heard about the band via the internet and had the means or the contacts to bring the band over. Countries outside of the U.S., Canada, Australia and Britain have a MUCH broader taste in music, and the beauty part is: being "signed to a label" matters a LOT less over there. If your music is available for purchase and your site, etc. come off as legit (even if it's a self-release on your own fake label), you can sell a boatload of records! Don't you see? It's finally happening! The American music buying public, aka your audience, don't want to be told what to listen to, like, or buy anymore. This mass exodus to new forms of music exposure, coupled with the technology being both more available as well as affordable, is the most important thing to happen in music in YEARS. If a station like Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles (a station who cares about the Music) can go up against the mothership of the Alternative format, KROQ, and pull enough listeners to make KROQ broaden its playlist, the door is open. Get your foot in there now! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Liz grew up in Los Alamitos. It was at the Community College radio station, coupled with a gig at Tower Records, that she got her first taste of the Industry. From there, she became the Los Angeles/ Orange County Street Marketing Rep for 3 years @ EMI Records. During this period she also worked as Danny Elfman's personal assistant for two & a half years. After her first CMJ (College Music Journal) Convention in 1994, she KNEW that the Music Business was what she wanted to do & that New York City was where she wanted to do it. So, she got her Associates Degree, moved to NYC & began working at Tommy Boy Music in the Underground Rock Dept in 1997. She was at Tommy Boy for almost 5 years before the company folded in March 2002. She now works out of her home in Astoria, Queens, NYC. notorious@notoriousradio.com http://www.notoriousradio.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- SONICBIDS is an online service that connects musicians and music promoters.
